Dr. VP. Sidhan

Dr.Valiyaparambil Padmanbhan Sidhan is a strong proponent of the Ayurvedic System of Medicine. Apart from his practice of medicine and scholastic pursuits in Ayurveda, he also finds time for educational, social and humanitarian activities. Hailing from the much-respected and traditional Ayurvedic family ‘CHOLAYIL’ of Kerala, he is born to Mrs. and Dr. V. K. Padmanabhan on 19th December 1931. His father too was a prolific advocate of Ayurveda belonging to the Kerala Government Medical Service. He has completed his academic pursuits at different prestigious institutions in India and abroad. He did Post Graduate Diploma in P.H.H. at the University of Delhi and took his Ph.D Degree from the Medicina Alternativa Institute affiliated to the Open International University for Complimentary Medicines, Colombo. Dr.V.P. Sidhan holds very responsible positions in reputed organisations like Cholayil Ayurvedic Health & Research Academy, Chennai and Cholayil Pharmaceuticals (P) Ltd., Pondicherry as Chairman and Mogappair Poly Clinic, Mugappair, Chennai as Director. He is also Director of Dorcas Market Makers Private Limited. The in-depth knowledge and vast experience which he gained at home while assisting his father in the treatment of his patients helped Dr. Sidhan much in his researches in Ayurveda. He got intensive training in identifying various Ayurvedic herbs and plants as well as in the preparation and proper administration of Ayurvedic formulations in the treatment of different ailments. He joined Kilpauk Medical College, Madras in 1957 for the DM & S course during which period, his enthusiasm for Ayurveda was stimulated further. Dr.V.P. Sidhan entered the Medical Services of Indian Railways as Medical Officer in 1964 and served it for over two decades. During his service at the Railways, he came across patients suffering from various ailments which were cured effectively without much expense and any side effects using Ayurvedic system of medicine. The Ayurvedic Bath Soap ‘MEDIMIX’ which is an amalgamation of eighteen very powerful Ayurvedic herbal ingredients to fight and cure skin disorders launched in 1969, was the brainchild of Dr.V. P. Sidhan and it is one of his greatest achievements in the field of Ayurvedic Research. Today, the ‘Medimix Ayurvedic bath soap stands numero uno not only in the Indian market but in the world with out any analogous for quality among the Ayurvedic soaps. It is his continued research in Ayurvedic drugs which resulted in the formulation of over 25 Ayurvedic formulations for various common ailments. In view of the practical difficulties in the traditional methods of carrying, storing and application of Ayurvedic medicines, Dr.V.P.Sidhan endeavored into its production in the forms of capsules, tablets and syrups to facilitate better usage. The busy business schedules and pharmaceutical research activities has never desisted him from involving in the socio-cultural, educational and humanitarian activities. Dr. Sidhan has all along been active in the Malayalam stage as well as in the film field and he has acted in more than 25 films of prominent directors. He is also a registered A Grade artiste of All India Radio and Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai. Formerly, he was also a Member of the Central Board of Film Certification, Govt. of India. Dr. Sidhan is recipient of a number of prestigious awards in recognition of his contributions in various fields such as: ‘Bharat Bhishag Ratna’ in 1995 instituted by All India Ayurveda Congress, ‘Outstanding Non-Resident Keralite in the field of Health’ award in 1999, and the ‘Dhanwantri Award of Excellence’ instituted by Medicina Alternativa Perarignar Anna Senior Naturopathis Council. He has also received the ‘Millennium Quality Award’ instituted by the Lions International, in 2000 and ‘Vocational Excellence Award’ instituted by the Rotary Club International in 1999. Dr. V.P. Sidhan is also recipient of the ‘Best Actor Award’ of Kerala Art Centre, Sahrudayavedi & Kaliyuga Theatre. His continuous involvement in the field of Ayurvedic Research itself is full proof evidence for his contributions not only in the field of Ayurveda, but in education as well. His involvement in the socio-cultural and educational as well as humanitarian activities is evident from the positions he hold in various organisations. Dr. V.P. Sidhan is Member – Medicinal & Aromatic Plants Board, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and is Senate Member – Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute and Pondicherry Institute of Management (PIM). He is also Founder / Executive Council Member – Asan Memorial Educational Institutions. He was District Chairman of Lions Clubs International, Dist. 324 A1 continuosly from 1996 to 2006 which is an all-time record of the Lions Club. He was President of the International Congress – ‘Ayurveda 2000’ and the First National Ayurveda Congress – 2000. Dr. V.P. Sidhan himself was the President of the Second and Third National Ayurveda Congress held in 2002 and 2004 respectively. Dr.V.P.Sidhans family consists of his wife Mrs. M. K. Soubhagyam, Proprietor , Cholayil Pharmaceuticals, Chennai and has a son – Mr. V.S. Pradeep, Managing Director, Cholayil Pharmaceuticals, Chennai and daughter – Mrs. Priya Anoop, Director, Cholayil Pharmaceuticals, Chennai. Dr. Sidhan is an active member of the Lions Club of Madras Egmore, involved in the conduct of Lions Blood Bank and Research Foundation as its Patron member, running of EGLEAP (Egmore Lions Leprosy Eradication Action Programme). He supports a number of poor students to pursue higher studies.Being a person who has travelled around the world, Dr. Sidhan has during the past few years, took it up over his shoulders the noble task of reviving the traditional martial art forms like Kalaripayattu, Silambattam etc. by organizing state and national-level championships. The Cholayil which was started with just ‘Medimix Ayurvedic bath soap’ has over the years grown into a multi-product group under the able and efficient direction and visionary zeal of Dr. V. P. Sidhan who has been assisted by his son Mr. V.S. Pradeep and his son-in-law Dr. A.V. Anoop. And today the ‘Cholayil Group’ can boast of own soaps, cosmetics, ready-mix food and pharmaceutical products in its basket.
